Our Google Search Autocompletes Are So Depressing

If there is such thing as an all seeing eye of the Internet, it would be Google Autocomplete. It takes in what we type into Google's search box and fills it out with common searches. The results of Autocomplete can be stereotypical, sexist, hilarious and... depressing. This video shows what the common autocomplete search is when you type in your age. I'm 15 and...

It's scary how the early age autocompletes are pregnant. Most of the results are sex related whether it be pregnant, never have been kissed, being a virgin, having a baby too late and so on.

The video, which was made by Marius B., uses a browser in incognito mode with no user signed in, no cookies and no previous search history. Marius B writes:

Business Notes: Decision on Internet Sales Tax Looms : Bryan Ellis ...

A new act currently under debate in Congress could mean that soon most people will pay sales taxes on their online purchases.

In the near future, you could be paying a lot more for the things you purchase online. A new sales tax bill called the Marketplace Fairness Act could allow 45 states and the District of Columbia to require online retailers to collect sales taxes on purchases, and those tax revenues could number in billions of dollars according to analysts. In fact, some estimates indicate that the new sales tax would generate about $23 billion more a year in increased tax collection[1]. Presently, states can only demand sales tax from online retailers if that retailer has a physical presence ? like a warehouse or a factory ? in the state and then only if the buyers are also located in the state. Although some states have tried to enforce the state sales tax on all buyers, only about one percent of buyers actually comply with this type of law. However, the proposed legislation would require any seller with more than $1 million a year in sales would be responsible for collecting the online sales tax and paying it to various states.

Not surprisingly, most online retailers object to the proposed tax legislation, with Amazon being one of the few exceptions. Most Amazon customers already pay sales taxes on purchases from that site because the company has warehouses in most states, so Amazon views this as a way to level the competitive field by requiring retailers with ?a smaller geographic footprint? to also deal with the sales tax. eBay, on the other hand, is adamantly opposed to the bill and has asked its millions of users to contact Congress and oppose the legislation, which will likely hurt many eBay users who run small internet businesses via the auction site.

Last week, the Senate voted to take up the legislation for ?debate and amendment? in hopes of getting the bill passed and enabling ?states and localities [to start collecting] a lot of money,? as senator Richard Durbin (D-IL), described it. National Retail Foundation (NRF) spokesman Stephen Schatz also felt optimistic, saying that the passage of such a tax is ?inevitable with states looking for revenue, with the growth of e-commerce?[2]. The president is also supporting the bill, although the White House is describing the advantages to such a bill directly opposite to the manner in which Amazon describes them. President Obama says that the new taxes will ?level the playing field for local small business retailers that are in competition every day with large out-of-state online companies.? The House of Representatives has yet to decide if it will allow a nearly-identical bill to the floor for debate and amendment this week.

Frequently used biologic agents might cause acute liver injury

Apr. 29, 2013 ? A commonly used class of biologic response modifying drugs can cause acute liver injury with elevated liver enzymes, according to a new study in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the official clinical practice journal of the American Gastroenterological Association. Patients with inflammatory diseases such as Chron's disease or ulcerative colitis often are prescribed tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-?) antagonists, which modify the body's response to infection. Patients with inflammatory arthropathies and selected dermatological diseases are also candidates to receive such compounds.

"TNF-? antagonists are extremely beneficial as therapies for several bowel, joint and skin inflammatory conditions," said Maurizio Bonacini, MD, AGAF, study author and associate clinical professor, University of California, San Francisco. "However, gastroenterologists, internists, rheumatologists and dermatologists all need to be aware of this potential complication and know how to diagnose it. They should conduct tests for autoimmunity early upon diagnosis of abnormalities to determine the proper path of care."

Researchers searched the U.S. Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network database and identified six well-characterized cases of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) in the setting of TNF-? antagonist therapy. Additionally, they reviewed 28 additional cases identified in PubMed. The researchers found acute liver injury in all cases, most frequently autoimmunity and hepatocellular injury, but mixed non-autoimmune patterns and cholestasis (blocked flow of bile from the liver) also occurred. No deaths were attributed to the liver injury; one patient required a liver transplant, which was attributed to pre-existing cirrhosis with superimposed DILI.

Of the TNF-? antagonists, infliximab-associated liver injury has been the best documented, most likely because of its earlier approval and more wide-spread clinical use. Etanercept and adalimumab have also been linked to drug-induced liver injury. So far, there are no published cases found to be linked to natalizumab, golimumab or certolizumab.

The researchers found that liver damage was typically resolved following drug discontinuation, although some patients did benefit from a course of corticosteroids. Importantly, patients treated with an alternative TNF-? after resolution of their liver injury appeared to tolerate the drugs without recurrence.

"If patients who are taking these biologic agents experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea and fatigue, physicians should check liver enzyme levels to determine if the symptoms are a result of these drugs," added Dr. Bonacini.

Netflix original series 'Orange is the New Black' debuting July 11th

Despite having recently introduced the likes of Hemlock Grove and House of Cards, Netflix isn't standing still: it's boosting its original content with yet another production, Orange is the New Black. The new comedic drama series, created by Weeds' own Jenji Kohan, is set to start streaming to Netflix subscribers worldwide beginning July 11th. Similar to Netflix's House of Cards, Orange is the New Black consists of 13 episodes running at around 60 minutes -- however, the main story here won't be based on drama coming out of D.C., but rather a "world populated with unforgettable characters and no-holds-barred humor set against the backdrop of a women's prison."
